EEG and MEG primers for tracking DBS network effects

چکیده

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment method for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It involves implantation stimulating electrodes in precisely guided fashion into subcortical structures and, at later stage, chronic these with implantable pulse generator. While the DBS surgery makes it possible to both record activity stimulate parts that are difficult reach non-invasive techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) magnetoencephalography (MEG) provide complementary information from other areas, which can be used characterize networks targeted through DBS. This requires, however, careful consideration different types artifacts data acquisition subsequent analyses. Here, we review technical issues associated EEG/MEG recordings patients experimental findings date. One major line research simultaneous recording local field potentials (LFPs) targets EEG/MEG. These studies revealed set cortico-subcortical coherent functioning distinguishable physiological frequencies. Specific network responses were linked clinical state, task or parameters. Another approach mapping DBS-targeted chronically implanted by during stimulation. track evoked single pulses bursts as well state shifts caused have potential biomarkers adapted guide stereotactic optimization especially important diseases where effect delayed develops slowly over time. The same could also potentially utilized online control effects new generation closed-loop stimulators currently entering use. Through future studies, use may facilitate integration circuit physiology decision making.

MEG and TMS combined with EEG for mapping alcohol effects.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive method of studying magnetic fields from outside the skull that are generated by at least partially synchronized neuronal populations in the brain. The advantage of MEG over electroencephalography (EEG) is the transparency of the skull, scalp, and brain tissue to the magnetic fields, which facilitates easy localization of the cortical activity. In ME...

Dynamic causal modeling for EEG and MEG.

We present a review of dynamic causal modeling (DCM) for magneto- and electroencephalography (M/EEG) data. DCM is based on a spatiotemporal model, where the temporal component is formulated in terms of neurobiologically plausible dynamics. Following an intuitive description of the model, we discuss six recent studies, which use DCM to analyze M/EEG and local field potentials. These studies illu...

Topological Inference for Eeg and Meg

Neuroimaging produces data that are continuous in one or more dimensions. This calls for an inference framework that can handle data that approximate functions of space, for example, anatomical images, time–frequency maps and distributed source reconstructions of electromagnetic recordings over time. Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) is the standard framework for whole-brain inference in neu...

EEG/MEG Signal Processing

Since its invention by the Hans Berger of the electroencepha-lography (EEG) in 1929, it was a strong scientific curiosity in analysis of human brain activity. In fact, the electroen-cephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) have developed into one of the most important and widely used quantitative diagnostic tools in analysis of brain signals and patterns. EEG and MEG potentially con...
